1.  Joshua was an ordinary man with an extraordinary work.

A.  He divides the land among the tribes.

B.  God is detailed.

C.  The word land appears 85 times.

D.  The words inherit or inheritance appear 60 times.

2.  Joshua 13

A.  Joshua was about 100 years old.

(Joshua 24:29) “Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.”

  • God told him, “Joshua, you are old.”

B.  The children of Israel had to settle the land.

  • It was not a land of rest.

(Hebrews 4:8) “Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come.”

  • Joshua would not be there for the entire settlement of the land.

1.  His work would be completed by others.

2.  I may never finish the work I am called to do; others will complete what I start.

3.  God buries His worker, but the work will go on.

4.  Stephen was martyred but God raised up Paul to continue the work.

(Acts 7:57-58) “Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.”

C.  The 2 ½  tribes received their inheritance.

  • No natural boundaries.

  • Lacked natural defenses.

  • Tribe of Reuben did not receive a double inheritance.

D.  The Levites were not given any land inheritance.

(Genesis 15:1) “The LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”

  • They got the Lord of the land instead of the land of the Lord.

  • Those called to ministry love the ministry to the extent that material things don’t matter as much.

(Matthew 6:20) “Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.”

(Matthew 16:26) “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”

  • Joseph’s family received a double portion.

3.  Joshua 14

A.  Inheritance was by lot.

  • Names were written on pottery and placed in an urn.
  • Land was allotted according to population.

B.  Caleb means bold.

  • One of the 12 spies.
  • Man of faith.
  • He knew the battle belong to the Lord.
  • He did not live in the past.
  • We serve a living God who endures forever.
  • Give me my mountain.

GROWTHWORK

(Joshua 14:6, 12 NLT) “Remember what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh-barnea.… For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God. … So give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.”
