(Acts 4:23-31) “And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, who by the mouth of Your servant David have said:

‘Why did the nations rage,
And the people plot vain things?
The kings of the earth took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His Christ.’

“For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”

Acts 4:24-31 provides a model for prayer during opposition, focusing on praising God as Creator, focusing on His purpose rather than the threat, and requesting boldness to speak the Word.

Main Idea: 

We need to pray in unity together when we are faced with opposition to the message of Christ or just difficult circumstances by focusing on God’s sovereignty and praying for the power to fulfill His purposes, not our comfort!

How the Early Church responded to blatant threats against their mission to make disciples and preach the Gospel:

1. Pray in Unity (v. 24a): Lift your voice together with other believers in one accord.

• Corporate prayer and unity amplify spiritual power, foster deep community bonds, and align believers with God’s collective purpose. 
• We have the promise of His presence when we are “together.”  (Ref. Matthew 18:18-20)

Application: 

When we pray in unity and call out to God together with urgency and surrender, we are amplifying our cry to God and we engage His divine power and presence that is capable of the impossible!!!

2. Acknowledge God’s Absolute Sovereignty (v. 24b): Start by worshiping God as the Creator of heaven, earth, and sea, who is in control of all circumstances.

• Adopt an attitude of surrender and awe
• Verbalize that God has absolute authority over ALL of creation!!! 
• Proclaim total reliance
• Respond with reverent praise
• Use praise as a weapon

Application: 

Our initial response to opposition, trials, struggles, attacks, etc… needs to be praise and surrender to God as our ONLY source of power, authority, and hope for fulfilling His mission for our lives.

3. Align with Scripture (v. 25-26): Pray using the Word of God, acknowledging that opposition to faith is prophesied and that God is still in control.

• God is not caught off guard by opposition, neither should we be!
• Even those who oppose Christ recognize the authenticity, boldness, and power of the Holy Spirit. (Ref. Acts 5:38-39)

• We need to recognize that those who oppose the message of Christ are acting out in futility against their Creator and not let it shake us! (Ref. Isaiah 45:9 NLT)

• We should expect lost people to act lost! (Ref. Ephesians 4:17-19)

Application: 

When we encounter opposition and attacks, we need to look to Scripture to see that God is not surprised and that His purposes will not be stopped by people. We need to pray expectantly and to confidently recount His power over ALL opposition.

4. Focus on God’s Plan, Not the Threats (v. 27-28): Ask for perspective to see that God can use challenging circumstances to fulfill His purpose.

• Joseph modeled this in his life story. (Ref. Genesis 45:5-8, 50:20)

Application: 

We need to see the opportunity for God’s plan to be realized especially when it seems unlikely or impossible; we need to trust that He will see things through as He sees fit. Our job is to keep moving forward in our mission. (Ref. Romans 8:28)

5. Ask for Holy Boldness (v. 29): Specifically request the courage and grace to speak the Gospel without fear, even when threatened.

• Ask for courage, not comfort
• Seek signs of His approval
• Respond with awe and submit to His authority
• Purpose = Empowerment for the believers
  • Overcoming fear
  • Enabling bold proclamation

Application: 

We need to pray for empowerment to boldly proclaim the truth of God in all areas of our lives; not for our opposition to be removed or for our comfort. We need to chase His power for His glory, not our comfort!

Call to Action:

1. Boldness: Requesting the ability to speak God’s word with confidence.

2. Sovereignty: Trusting that God is in control of the situation.

3. Empowerment: Asking for the Holy Spirit’s power to witness.
