FASTING WITHOUT PRAYER IS A DIET
by Mark Warda
How many of you enjoy a hobby? Maybe it’s woodworking, arts and crafts, auto mechanics, gaming, or collecting something. Have you ever found yourself so involved, so focused, so totally into what you’re doing that you forget to eat? And then once you’ve realized you’ve not eaten you still persist with what you’re doing, perhaps thinking, “Just a little longer; or just one more level to beat.” The bottom line is that you’re intentionally denying yourself food to do something more important. This is a simple understanding of what fasting is! However, what’s “more important” is not a painting or a video game. It’s prayer.
You see, prayer is an essential part of fasting. Fasting without prayer is merely a diet! We must not think of fasting as only what we are giving up, but what we are doing because of what we are giving up. For example, if you’re adding a supercharger to your car and you have tools and parts everywhere, you’re focus isn’t on what you are not doing; that is, eating; but on what you are doing. Fasting is the same way.
We sing the song, “Breathe” with the lyrics, “You are the air I breathe.” It reminds us of our dependence upon God. Listen to words of David in Psalm 63. As you fast, make it your own prayer.
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you. (Psalm 63:1-3, NLT)
God is the source of all that we need and focusing on Him; praying to Him; and praising Him is better than any hobby. His love is better than life!
