HUNGER AND THIRST FOR GOD
by Mark Warda
As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. (Psalm 42:1-2)
C.S. Lewis, in his book “Reflections on the Psalms”, described the psalmists’ craving for God as an “appetite for God”.
During this 40 Day fast, allow your appetite for food, or whatever it is you’ve given up, be turned to an appetite for God. Like the metaphor of the deer panting for water, may we hunger and thirst after God’s presence.
The Hebrew in verse 2 literally is “see the face of God.” This is poetic imagery referring to the refreshment and deliverance one can find when God is present and attentive to one’s need. (Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary).
This Psalm expresses “spiritual hunger” that can only be satisfied by Jesus who said in John 7:37-38 that those who come to Him and drink will have these streams flowing from their hearts.
So allow this voluntary fast to drive you to God, for His presence, where we find that He is attentive and able to meet our every need.
